Hi there,
Today’s spotlight is on fruits and vegetables . . .
Personally, I was not always into vegetables but since my weight loss journey, I have come to embrace them. I have even found ways to make them delicious, and I like that they are nutritional.
Actually I enjoy fruit more th
an vegetables, but lately, nothing makes me happier than seeing my plate colorful with vegetables. The only reason that I have started embracing them, and including them in every meal I eat is because they are high in anti oxidants and phytonutrients. These are the guys that neutralize the harmful radicals that are associated with cancer.
There are even more reasons to love vegetables – they also contain vitamins, fibre and flavonoids which can go a long way in protecting you from coronary cancer.
Yes, I love that vegetables come up tops when it comes to my health, but for people like me who are also interested in burning fat and losing weight, they really are a lifesaver. In comparison to fruits, to me they come out number one, because they have far less sugar than fruits and therefore are lower in kilojoules.
They contain the same nutrients to fruit, but at the same time they can make you feel fuller at mealtime without hiking the kilojoule intake.
So in a nutshell, the general rule is, as with fruits, have 5 different vegetables a day. You can steam them, or boil them, or bake them. Do stay away from frying them . . .
Like vegetables, fruits are filled with nutrients also. I am sure by now you know that you are encouraged to eat five fruits a day, but I do wonder how many of us are actually doing this. I have just recently started doing this, thanks to my fruit smoothies that I have recently discovered.
And yes, even though we have already established that fruit contain more kilojoule content than vegetables, they are still the healthier option as compared to cake or pudding.
Like vegetables, including fruits in your diet will boost your immune system and will keep diseases far away from you. As with vegetables, fruits also contain vitamins, minerals, fiber as well phytonutrients.
As with vegetables, the more the variety of fruits you eat, the better. Try to eat fruits from all the different groups, for example eat a fruit from each of the following : eat grapes or blueberries which come from the purple group, paw paw or pineapple which is from the orange or yellow group, bananas or litchi which comes from the white group, kiwi which is from the green group as well strawberries which is from the red group.
To summarize on the benefits of fruits and vegetables:
Eating more fruits and vegetables will benefit your health immensely, and will probably save you hundreds of dollars in medical aid bills in your later life. Just by including them in your nutrition, you can reduce the risk of developing various types of cancers, stroke and cardiovascular diseases.
You can also lower your blood cholesterol and regulate your bowel habits, because of the dietary fiber that is found in both fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables also lower oxidative stress, which is a major contributor to aging. I can confidently say that most of us want to look younger than our biological ages, and some people have gone to great lengths just to defy the signs of aging and add years to their lives.
So, do stock up on those vegetables and fruits . . . they could very well save your life.
