Fruit Smoothies For Weight Loss

24 Mar

Hi there,

It is still the earlier part of 2010 but I have already fallen off the wagon. I haven’t been to the gym in over a month and I got distracted as a result of my trip to Germany. I had to go see my little nephew who was very very sick.

I am back home now, but it is taking longer for me to go back to my routine of exercising  4 to 5 times a week. The great news though is that I haven’t gained not a single lb of weight. This is despite the fact that I haven’t set foot in a gym in over a month. How did I manage to do that, you may be wondering?

Basically, I have just been eating healthy. Lots of vegetables and lots of fruits – the normal stuff. But there’s also something that I have discovered – fruit smoothies!

I have always had trouble with eating 5 fruits a day, but with the smoothies, it is really a breeze. I had the idea when I bought a smoothie at a health shop, and I thought they charged too much for it. That same afternoon, I went to the grocery shop and stocked up on fruits – pears, apples, oranges, strawberries, kiwi, mangoes, banana’s, litchi and berries. Yeah, quite a mouthful right?

I was too excited, there was no stopping me. The first fruit smoothie I ever made consisted of 3 strawberries, 3/4 of a banana, 1/2 a pear, 4 litchis and four berries with mango juice. It is really awesome, and it felt like a real meal.

I totally fell in love with my smoothies, and since then, that’s how I wake up. My breakfasts are alternated between smoothies or cereal, depending on my mood.

I have since learned to be creative with the smoothies, and now and again I add a touch of vegetables into them. My best additions so far have been carrots and tomato. It is early days, so I am still trying out a few concoctions. I will definitely keep you posted.

All I can say now is, I have put the fun back into the way I eat fruit. I even look forward to it . . .

So why don’t you get creative and create your own smoothie? My bet is you will definitely fall in love like I have.

Are You Following These 7 Tips To Healthy Eating?

24 Sep

Eat your way to a DSC01854healthier you.

Healthy eating takes planning, especially if you are on the move during the day. Without a plan you can find yourself eating unhealthy foods or foods that are empty in calories or eating irregularly, which can jeopardize your weight loss efforts and prevent your body from performing optimally. Here is my recommendation to healthy nutrition, which worked for me:

1. Cut down on fast foods. Yes I know that it can be very tempting at times and it can be hard to say no to that burger and fries or that pizza, but fast foods can be high in fat and calories.

2. Reduce your intake of fats especially the fat found in red meat and chicken skin. This fat is also a source of cholesterol, so not only are your weight loss efforts in vain you are seriously compromising your health.

3. Some of us do have a sweet tooth, but it is important to cut down on the sugar, especially processed sugar. If you do have a craving, opt for a fruit or 100% juice, instead of sodas and sweets.

4. Remember what your parents and teachers used to say about fruit and vegetables? They were right, it is very good for you. Try and aim for five portions of fruits and vegetables a day. The general rule is, the more color your fruits and vegetables have, the more beneficial they are for your body.

5. Eating out has proved to be a challenge for some people, but it does not have to be. Opt for grilled foods, vegetables and if you opt for salad, choose a salad that does need salad dressing. If you have to use salad dressing, opt for dressing that is light in fat.

6. Meal skipping is a big no. Aim for three balanced meals and a fruit or vegetable snack in between. This will ensure your body has the energy it needs and it will not go into starvation mode.

7. Regulate your portions. Rather spread your meal over a couple of hours instead of having a huge meal on one seating. Do not wait until you are nearing starvation to eat, because then you will consume more food than you need.

Maintaining your body weight
is not just about looking good, it is about good nutrition and health. It shouldn’t be something that is done temporarily; it is a way of life. Losing weight will require that you eat right, control your portions and incorporate some form of exercise.

Top 7 Foods That Burn Calories

12 Sep

YummyHi there,

If you are like me, you will embrace any method that you can use to ensure you burn calories without exercising or going to the gym. Exercise is great and I love doing it, but I definitely will say yes to any help I can get to ensure my body burns the calories that I want it to. Here are the top foods that you want to have included in your diet:

1. Fruits. We know fruits are good for our bodies but we are talking about fruit that are rich in vitamin C. The vitamin C helps in releasing the fat from the body, thereby helping with calorie burning. The fruits include Apples, Water melon, Oranges, strawberry, lemons and Grapefruit

2. Vegetables. These vegetables also contain vitamin C and they work pretty the same way that the fruits work. These include cucumber, Carrots, Tomatoes, Chilies, Broccoli, Cabbage and Celery

3. Green tea. It increases your metabolism and burns calories.

4. Dairy products like cheese and milk. Dairy products contain calcium and protein. The calcium and protein that comes from low fat products help with weight loss.

5. Foods that are high in fiber. These include whole grain food like whole grain pasta or bread. The body works harder to burn fiber in your body. The harder it works the more calories it will burn.

6. Lean meats. Chicken, turkey, sirloin are rich in iron. Iron forms hemoglobin in your body and it carries the oxygen in your red blood cells. Without the optimal amount of oxygen in the body, which means less hemoglobin, your energy levels will drop and so will your metabolism. A drop in metabolism means lower calories burned.
7. Garlic. Yes I know what you are thinking, it may leave your mouth smelling and undesirable but not only does garlic have healing advantages, it boosts your metabolism.

I bet most of these foods are in your kitchen cupboards right now, and what will be left for you to do is to include them as part of your daily nutrition. These foods are great also if used as snack, as opposed to the candy and chips.

Malnutrition is not to be taken lightly, so strife to have a balanced healthy meal at all times. These foods can be a great help if included in your nutrition but the best way to help them work their magic is to include an exercise plan in your daily life. Exercise still remains the best calorie burning thing that you can do.

Do You Know The Benefits Of Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery?

6 Aug

People who are struggling with their weight are often on the lookout for new effective form of weight loss. The mini gastric bypass surgery seems to be the answer for most people, as they have tried different methods for weight loss with little success.

The great thing about the mini gastric bypass surgery is that it is reversible, and that is why a lot of people are going this route. That is the first benefit about this procedure and that is partly the reason why there is such a huge demand for it. It is a great advantage because once people have lost the weight, some actually want to get it reversed and use other forms of weight management programs.

Also, people are different; some do not recover as well from a procedure like this.  It is a huge benefit for people who do not recover as well after surgery, to have the chance to have it reversed. Also for those people who are not benefiting as they should from the surgery, they can have a chance to go back to their old form.

Mini gastric bypass surgery is a quicker procedure to perform, as compared to the traditional approach. This in itself is another great benefit. It has been said that it takes a quarter of the time that the traditional procedure takes, which translates to about 30 minutes, and the patient can be discharged from the hospital 24 hours after the procedure has been performed. The actual time for this procedure and the recovery time however will depend on the doctor performing the procedure as well as how well the patient’s body reacts to the procedure.

Once performed, this procedure is meant to decrease your hunger levels while increasing feeling full. That is perhaps the greatest benefit of this procedure, which is the effects that one will go through once the procedure is done. The desired result of this procedure is losing weight which is the reason people opt for it. Maintaining your weight is hard work, so even with this procedure, you will still need to eat healthily and be on some exercise routine to be able to get to your weight loss goal.

If you want to know more about this procedure or you are thinking of doing it, consult your doctor before you take any steps. Most people do not have to go this route if they combine exercise and healthy eating, as they do get to their desired weight goal.

A Guide In Planning Your Meals

29 Jul

Losing weight for the sake of looking good is not good enough, managing one’s weight should also be about healthy living. With this in mind, you will then choose to manage your weight without endangering your body. As you probably already know, not managing your weight can lead to health problems including Type 2 Diabetes and osteoarthritis to name just a few

I remember when I wanted to lose weight so bad that I was starving myself. Yes I did lose the weight but I was tired and run down and had no energy to get through the day. Needless to say, because I was tired and hungry, I gained all that weight back when I started eating again. So the lesson here is don’t compromise your body just to lose weight, lose weight because you are eating healthily are taking care of your body. It’s the only way to achieve long term weight loss

Because our lives are constantly on the move, it can be difficult to control our eating habits and it can make it easy to reach for unhealthy snacks. It is important to keep an eye on what you are nibbling on throughout the day, the kilojoules do add up with all those other things that you nibbled on during the day that you thought were small.

Try to make the best food choices you can make, especially when you are on the go. For example : choose a whole-wheat sandwich with a salad and replace that fizzy drink with water instead of having a burger, chips and a fizzy drink. Having the burger is putting in approximately 5,900 kJ in your body as opposed to approximately 1,750 kJ had you opted for the whole-wheat sandwich.

Another important factor to remember is to substitute your snacks for fruit. For an example, opting to eat an apple instead of eating a packet of chips is a healthy alternative. The apple only has approximately 340kJ as compared to the packet of chips that has 805kJ.

This may seem trivial at first but as you become aware of the food choices you make, it not only becomes easier, it becomes a part of your lifestyle. Your body reaps all the benefits and when it does you will start to feel great. One last thing, limit your snacks to no more than 3 times a day
