In my view, intensity is the most critical aspect of any exercise regime and can mean the difference between someone who reaches their goals and someone who doesn’t. Increasing your workout’s intensity will stimulate your body to burn more calories and induce a greater cardiovascular response. It will also allow you to have a more time efficient workout.

If you are looking to burn fat and become more toned, then increasing your exercise intensity is critical. Many people have the misconception that if you workout at a higher intensity you will no longer be burning fat since you will be in your “cardio zone”. Whereas, if you keep your intensity low for a longer duration you will burn more fat since you will be in your “fat burning zone”.

Let me clarify this for you once and for all. By training at a low intensity (<70% max) it is true that you use fat as your predominant source of fuel. While exercising at a higher intensity (>75% max) your main fuel source is carbohydrate but you will ultimately burn more calories. And since 1 pound of fat is equivalent to 3500 calories, the ultimate goal is to burn as many calories as possible to create a negative energy balance!

One of the best ways to achieve this intensity is through the use of full-body exercises (circuit training set up) in conjunction with interval training. The benefit of full body exercises is that they utilize more muscle in any given movement – thus, you burn more calories. The inherent intensity of the workout also means that each exercise becomes more challenging as your heart rate is sustained at a much higher level as a result of not giving yourself enough rest between exercises.

Here are a couple of benefits to following an exercise program combining circuit training and interval training:

1. Intervals and circuits vastly reduce boredom. Traditional steady state cardio training and/or weight lifting can become quite boring. Interval training and circuit training offer more variety and excitement to your workouts.

2. Interval training increases post-exercise energy expenditure (calories burned following exercise) more than steady-state exercise, which means that more fat is burned. After intense exercise, the body needs extra calories as it works to repair muscles, replace energy stores (i.e. carbohydrate) and restore the body to its normal state (e.g. reduce heart rate).

As this can take many hours, you will keep on burning more calories long after the workout is over. In fact, research shows that metabolic rate is higher for several hours following interval training compared to steady state exercise.

3. Interval training burns more calories. As an example, 30 minutes on an Elliptical machine using a steady state program will burn roughly 292 calories, whereas 30 minutes of intervals will burn approximately 584 calories!

Here is a sample circuit traing workout that will leave you huffing and puffing:

WARM-UP – bike, treadmill, elliptical, rower + dynamic stretching (5-10 min)

CIRCUIT (45 seconds for each exercise, with 15 seconds rest between exercises :: 5-7 min to complete 1 set)

Lunge walks with lateral raises

Plank (on stability ball)

Squats with medicine ball shoulder press

Push-ups

Side Bridges

Reverse Pull-ups

Burpies

INTERVAL TRAINING (cardio machine)

20 sec @ 100% : 40 sec @ 70% x 5 = 5 min

Repeat Circuit and Interval 3 times

Total Workout Time: 45 – 50 min

Do this workout 4 times over the next 2 weeks and watch the difference intensity brings to your workouts – and your results!

A Type of Trans Fat That Makes You Leaner?

Hi

I wanted to share a pretty unique article with you today from my trusted colleague and Nutrition Specialist Mike Geary.

You probably thought you already knew everything you needed to know about trans fats, but this article may surprise you…

A type of Trans Fat that makes you leaner?

We all know that trans fats are horrible for your health right? But what if I told you that there is a specific type of trans fat that’s natural (not man-made) and actually helps you to lose fat faster and build lean muscle?

Well, check out the excerpt from my new program that I co-authored called “The Fat Burning Kitchen” below:

“…Not many people know this fact, but CLA is actually a natural form of trans fat, but it is FAR different than the artificial trans fats from hydrogenated oils that are so deadly and that you hear all of the negative information about. CLA is actually one of the only healthy trans fats in existence.

CLA is a natural form of healthy trans fat that occurs in the fat on the meat, and in the dairy from ruminant animals such as cattle, bison, deer, goats, sheep, kangaroo, etc. CLA in natural form has been shown to help in burning off abdominal fat and also maintaining or even building lean muscle.

Warning: do NOT use CLA supplements as they contain an artificially created form of CLA that is a different CLA isomer compared to the natural CLA isomer that’s found in meats and dairy from ruminant animals. The CLA isomer found in CLA supplements can have negative effects in the body and is more similar to an artificial trans fat. The only form of CLA is that going to benefit your health and help you to reduce body fat is the natural CLA isomers from grass-fed beef, bison, venison, etc or from grass-fed raw milk or cheeses.

Also, grass-fed meats and dairy contain 3-5x the CLA of grain fed meats, so avoid your typical grain-fed grocery store meats.

So that is the reason why I focused more on red meats such as grass-fed beef and bison during this 23-day cutting cycle instead of chicken, turkey, or fish — because the extra CLA can really help in accelerating fat loss and preserving lean muscle…”

There you have it… there actually IS such a thing as a healthy trans fat… bet you didn’t know that!

This was an excerpt from my brand new program I just co-authored with an extremely knowledgeable nutrition expert named Catherine Ebeling.

The program is called “The Fat Burning Kitchen”.

Because this is our launch week… you can grab the program for half price this week only. The price will double in a few days at the end of the week.

Also, I wanted to really knock your socks off with this program, so if you grab a copy this week, I even decided to throw in a special bonus section that gives you every single nitty gritty detail of how I just went from 10.2% bodyfat down to 6.9% bodyfat in only 23 days while I prepped for a photo shoot recently.

This is advanced stuff for when you might have an event such as a wedding or a beach vacation coming up and you need to knock off some significant bodyfat in only 3-4 weeks time frame. There’s nothing unhealthy here… but these techniques are definitely “amped up” from the norm.

When I say nitty gritty details… I’m talking everything, including specific spices, teas, nutrients, exactly what I ate, carb/protein/fat ratios and how I manipulated timing of nutrients to accelerate fat loss.

Seriously, we did the body comp tests and I went from 10.2% BF to 6.9% BF in only 23 days. I’ll be sharing the pics on my blog in a week or 2, when I get the finals back from the photographer.

You’ll find out all of those details of how I did this in the bonus chapter if you grab a copy this week.

Check it out here!

Enjoy!

The Little Secrets About Green Tea That Will Improve Your Health

20 Aug

green tea 004There has been a lot of talk of how green tea improves one’s health, and recently there is talk about how green tea can help you lose weight. But most people do not know or understand how it actually does that.

Green tea revs up your metabolism. What most people don’t know is that green tea contains caffeine. What does caffeine do? Caffeine is a stimulant, so it helps you burn extra calories. I know what you are thinking!

Yes coffee and sodas also have caffeine but the difference with these is they contain a lot more calories than what is found in green tea. The benefit with green tea is that it contains epigallocatechin gallate, which is commonly known as ECCG. The ECCG that is in green tea makes green tea more effective in helping you burn calories because it makes the caffeine more effective.

What most people do not know about green tea is that it also helps with glucose regulation. What this does is that after a meal, the green tea will slow the rise of blood sugar in the body, and this will reduce the possibility of fat being stored in the body. So the question is, do you already see the health benefits of replacing your cup of coffee with green tea?

The decision should not be hard at all – I have already traded my coffee for green tea. Not only does it give you weight loss benefits, it can reduce the risk of heart problems, help control your cholesterol levels and more. So not only will you be enjoying the weight loss benefits, you will also be improving your general health.

So how much of green tea should you actually consume to enjoy the total benefits? There is no set number of cups to drink a day but it has been said that between 3-5 cups a day is optimal.
With all these weight loss benefits of green tea, you still need to exercise and eat healthily to get the maximum weight loss that you desire. Green tea will not sort out your weight loss issues, but it will help you if you stick to a healthy diet and exercise.

Have You Tried These Proven Weight Loss Exercise Programs?

5 Aug

Pride 2009 072Everyone who has issues with their weight is on the lookout for the next hottest weight loss exercise program. Truth be told, there are a lot of programs out there who are promising you success but not all of them actually do what they say they do. This article is aimed at outlining a few of the popular exercise programs so that you don’t waste your time trying out programs that might not be right for you.

The best and cheapest way to go about an exercise program is to design your own. You are the person who knows yourself and your body best. You know what the demands of your time are, including your family time or time spent at work, therefore you will be able to design something that suits your lifestyle and your schedule. If you are going to go for this route, you will have to do some research to ensure you come up with a program that will suit your needs and your goals.

Designing your own program will require that you understand how exercise affects your body. The basis for weight loss is to burn more calories than you consume, therefore do not design something that will not give you the results you want. In other words, do not make it too easy on your body because you will not burn enough fat to see the effects of the workouts. On the same token, do not overwork your body. Start slowly and intensify your workouts as you get fitter so that you do not injure yourself.

An exercise program that is designed to give results should consist of both strength training and cardiovascular exercises. The cardio exercises that you can do include jogging, whether on a treadmill or around your neighborhood or some form of aerobics. Strength training exercises are exercises that will build muscles like weight lifting, pulls-ups and the like. Find the right mix of exercises that will stimulate you and that you can achieve the weight goal that you have set for yourself.

Some people prefer more structure in their exercise. Taebo is one such weigh loss exercise. It is great because it uses a lot of the different muscles in the body, and it is not your usual aerobic exercise. What sets Taebo apart from the usual aerobics is that it blends martial arts with self defense techniques which result in a calorie burning total body workout. It is also great because instead of joining a class, you can do it in the comfort of your home, if you opt to buy the Taebo DVD series. The jumping jacks that are combined with kicks and punches make this exercise program irresistible to a lot of people.

Besides Taebo, people have had a lot of success with the Pilates exercise program. Pilates is similar to yoga in that it uses intensity and relaxation to burn fat and grow the muscles. An important factor with the Pilates exercise program is the breathing technique. Breathing is not just important for Pilates, it can be used for any exercise program. Being able to use the breathing technique can be very beneficial to you because it reduces fatigue while you exercise. This technique alone can allow you to exercise for longer periods of time, which can accelerate you to your weight loss goals.
