The Health Benefits of Beginning a Yoga Class

If you are considering taking a yoga class I have one piece of advice for you: do it.  It’s a great experience.  I first tried yoga while in college and have been a believer ever since.  Yoga is especially rewarding because it improves your mental as well as physical health.  If you are experiencing back pain, muscle pain, or constant anxiety, you may be able to find some relief through yoga.

Increased Strength
One of yoga’s physical health benefits is increased strength.  The various yoga poses target different muscle groups.  The Tree Pose works the leg muscles by having you stand on one leg, while Downward Facing Dog strengthens your arm muscles.  Perhaps even more important, virtually all yoga poses work to strengthen your core (back and abdominal muscles).  Our core muscles are responsible for supporting much of our body weight, yet generally receive little attention.

Weak core muscles are often responsible for injuries chronic back pain—just think of all the tasks you do throughout the day that involve lifting or bending.  Your core muscles are also responsible for balance control.  If you want to improve your balance, the first step is to strengthen your core.  Yoga helps to prevent injury by gradually improving core strength and balance.

Flexibility
While flexibility may seem more like a bonus than a necessity, it plays an important role in health.  Many people suffer from muscle and back pain.  Back pain is often caused when a bone becomes displaced from its original position.  Chiropractors work to relieve pain by manipulating the bones back into place.  However, chiropractics alone is not a permanent fix to the problem.

If you have visited a chiropractor you have probably noticed that the bone eventually slips back out of place. This is because the muscles around the bone tightened while the bone was out of place and they begin to pull it back out of place after it is fixed.  This can be prevented through regular stretching.  I have dealt with lower back pain, and about two years ago began stretching every day.  The difference it has made in my pain level is astonishing.  Yoga helps reduce and prevent pain by increasing flexibility.

Stress Relief
I first tried yoga while in college.  It was finals week and the stress of deadlines kept me from sleeping.  One of my friends had a yoga tape so we hosted an amateur yoga session in the basement of our dorm.  It struck me was how relaxed I felt afterwards.  Sure, when I first started yoga I didn’t have the best balance and I couldn’t touch my toes, but it still felt great.

Yoga incorporates fluid and slow movements that help calm your mind.  It also teaches you to take slow, deep breathes to relax the body.  Constant stress can have terrible effects on the body so finding ways to relax and release tension is vital.  If you are frequently anxious and overwhelmed, taking a yoga class can teach you how to relax.

Fat Burning Drive – How Many Calories Do You Need To Consume To Lose Weight

A lot of people who are trying to lose weight are trying to figure out how many calories they should be consuming in a day for them to be able to lose weight. As we know, weight loss can be difficult and in certain cases impossible to achieve without exercise and healthy eating, so it stands to reason that with the new consumption in calories should also come an exercise plan and healthy eating habits.

After a person determines how many calories that he or she should consume per day in order to lose weight, that individual should keep a food diary. The diary needs to record every food and calorie that he or she consumes on a daily basis. Thus, a person will know if he or she is eating the amount of calories that will achieve weight loss. Patterns will start to become ingrained in a person after he or she has kept a food diary for some time.

At this point, it should be noted that a person should not become discouraged if his or her food diary indicates that the amount of calories consumed on a given day was greater than what was needed in order to achieve weight loss. Everyone is going to have some bad days here and there.

In the quest to count calories and lose weight, a person should absolutely not cut out ice cream and other sweets. Treats are fine in moderation. The idea is to eat more healthy things and less fattening things, and a person should not deprive himself or herself of sweets. He or she just needs to eat less of them than they did in the past.

In addition to eating sweets in moderation, a person should learn about healthier food choices as he or she continues to keep a food diary. More vitamins, fiber, and protein should be included in a person’s diet. Likewise, his or her daily eating regimen should include less fat and sugar at the same time. Furthermore, the Internet is a great source of many healthy recipes. It is exciting to try out and make different dishes that prove to be beneficial to one’s health as well.

It should be noted that calorie counting and eating healthy should not be thought of as a temporary diet. Rather, they should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle that a person maintains for the rest of his or her life. An individual has to think about his or her new regimen on a long-term basis as opposed to only something to be done in the short term.

In conclusion, calorie counting and weight loss are facts of life for many people. A person can follow a series of different steps that can help him or her to achieve a healthy lifestyle and cut calories.
